Sorting through 2nd-hand clothes at Mchovu ghetto-fashion house, Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam
"Mtumba" is Swahili slang for 2nd-hand clothes imported from Europe and USA, and sold to retailers in bales. In 1960s and 70s these were referred to as “kafa ulaya” (which means 'clothes from someone who died in Europe'!). In the 1980s came "Mtumba".
