Face-off in Kibera Kenyans braced themselves for what was set to be the closest and most unpredictable election ever in Kenyan history. December 27th was D-day. In Africa’s largest slum, Kibera, aka kibich, the ghetto peeps were optimistic that their main man Hon Raila Odinga was gonna beat the odds and change their lives.
But that was not to be.
With the announcement of results came frustration. “They have stolen from us and with that no peace will prevail”, a kibich guy was captured saying on camera.
I live a few minutes away from Kibera, and now peace has gone out the window.

Eastleigh has seen its fair share of crime in the past, but no one would ever describe it as hell-on-Earth. But now, I would.
It is the worst of times here in Eastleigh, particularly around section one. Armed gangsters are relieving people of their property and hard-earned money. In many cases, they’re not satisfied with this alone, so they “finish off” the victims: decapitation.
This is what has become of Eastleigh’s section one.

Riots in Kibera On December 27th, election day, Kenya witnessed what should have been a proud moment to consolidate 10 years of a functioning multi-party democratic system. Instead the ghettos are in flames, people are being slaughtered and we are holding our breath, hoping this does not descend into civil war.

View of the site After sitting or hours during a UNEP conference held at a church neighboring the Dandora damp site, I was not satisfied with the text book answers given by the doctors who had carried out the research, the promises being made by the city council or the crocodile tears of the politicians who later got into their posh cars and drove away leaving the inhabitants to their misery. So I began my own ‘research’. I started by introducing myself to some locals who relate to me their own experiences of the dreaded dump site.
