Artists bring beauty to Woodstock, Cape Town

Woodstock, Cape Town - 1 (600x397)

It happened to Brooklyn, Brixton, and since 2003 it's been slowly happening to a suburb of Cape Town called Woodstock. The gradual transformation of what used to be seen as a "dangerous" area into something vibrant, more racially mixed and, eventually, the place to live if you want lattes, art galleries and organic food within spitting distance of your front door.

Cape Town, like the rest of South Africa, is still widely divided, racially and with respect to wealth, but as the country continues to shake off its past you can bet you'll be seeing a lot more of what's happening in Woodstock in other parts of the city and country. We're not the only ones counting on it.

2003 was the year the Woodstock Upliftment Project was initiated, followed a couple of years later by the establishment of the Woodstock Improvement District (WID), all of which is about doing exactly what it says on the box. But that's the stuff of hard "official" targets. Art is part of the softer story of transformation, and the above clip is from an Adidas-sponsored mural project, a campaign to promote and celebrate local artists, mural art, and the original culture within communities in South Africa, the chosen communities being Woodstock, Cape Town, and Soweto, Johannesburg.

Now, how about the transformation of Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain?
