Kalamashaka (a.k.a. K-Shaka) is a hip hop crew based in Dandora, a ghetto estate in Nairobi, Kenya. The Swahili rap trio was formed in the mid 90's and scored a big hit in Kenya with 'Tafsiri Hii' in 1997. Kalamashaka consists of three members: Oteraw, Kama and Johny. The group has performed at shows for international rap stars, among them Coolio and Lost Boyz and have done collaborations with Dead Prez and other international artists.
Their first album 'Ni Wakati', released in 2001, was well received with South Africa's Channel O playing one of the videos 'Fanya Mambo' from the album. The group is known to be a political conscious crew, addressing street crime, tribalism, and Africa's conflicts.
