Gokh-Bi System is a rap group from Senegal based in Boston, USA. The group was formed in 1993 by three childhood friends. They started experimenting rap in different languages: English, French, Arabic, Wolof, Serer and Jola.
After a few years, the group added percussion, vocals and the ekonting, a banjo-like traditional instrument of the Jola people. They draw inspiration from tassu, a traditional form of rapping found in Senegal. Gokh-Bi's first international feature was on the compilation cd 'Africa raps' which came out on German label Trikont in 2001.
In the early 2000's the group members moved to the USA to continue recording and performing from there, further emphasizing the crossover between Senegalese and American styles and adding American musicians to their live set.
