Considered the voice of the new generation Somalis in the UK, British/Somali singer, composer, writer and music producer Aar Maanta, produces a mix of traditional Somali music with a diversity of genres such as hip hop, R ‘n B and reggae. The new generation Somali immigrants in the UK identify with the music of Aar, because he addresses issues resonating within the Somali community. All Aar’s work is inspired by the struggle of Somali people and the beauty of Somali culture.
Aar Maanta moved from his native Somalia to the UK in the late 1980’s due to the civil war. In 2009 he released his debut album ‘Hiddo & Dhaqan’, featuring songs such as ‘Asalamu Alaykum’, ‘Saafi’ and ‘Dhadhami’. He set up his own recording studio ‘Horn 2 Grove’ working with many legendary Somali artists including Maryam Mursal and Ahmed Ismail Hussein (Hodeide) who is a master oud player and one of Somalia’s greatest composers.
