With so much music out there clamoring for your attention, you know it's a good sign when you listen to a new album and wonder, who is this? There’s a good chance you’ll ask the same when you listen to the witty, lyrical explosion of humour, education and reality that is Songsiwrotewheniwasthinkingthethingsiwasthinkingsoirecordedityeahmein! Huh? Yeah. That's what we thought too when we first saw the album title, but that was before we discovered that Kwabena Jones was part comedian, part emcee, part hiplife artist and 100% alter ego of Bosco, the Ghanaian rapper whose hilarious bow-tied, nerd glasses-wearing, prissy-voiced creation is a medium through which to channel his sarcastic and alternative brand of humour.

Whatever they were doing before came to be known as ‘break dancing’. More importantly, a new form of music was born: hip-hop. It too was described as a fad. Thirty or so years on though, hip-hop has become an all-conquering mainstay of American (if not global) culture. More than a form of music, it is a culture.

And while his soccer related activities were centered around a track that had very little to do with the artist's origins in hip hop music, K'naan shared his plans of recording a proper hip hop album - his friend Mos Def had ranked him among his favorite emcees and certainly there are more hip hop heads waiting for their turn. 18 months later, K'naan is back, not with a full album but an EP titled 'More beautiful than silence' and we agree, what a way to break the quiet. The tracklist was announced, featuring a cameo by Nelly Furtado, but the first single delivers on his promise - 'Nothing to lose' is a bare bones hip hop production with US based rapper Nas, by now a veteran in the hip hop scene and one of K'naan's early inspirations when he first came to Canada and the USA in the mid 90s.

The album is a journey through the life of the Seattle born-and-raised Ethiopian-American artist and community activist. It’s a multi-lingual, multi-genre, multi-cultural journey that is chronicled through a variety of diverse lenses and voices.

When the subject of West African music from the 60s and 70s is discussed, it’s hard for the casual fan to look beyond the great Fela Kuti. Fela alone is enough for many people, since his body of work is quite extensive. For the novice, going through it all is a daunting task, so, sadly, many don’t venture beyond that.
In all likelihood this will be the first time most music fans will have heard Grammy Award winning R&B singer-songwriter, rapper and record producer Estelle speaking or singing in Pidgin English, but then she is half-Senegalese and there can't be many people with roots in West Africa who do not understand Pidgin , a lingua franca that has had its cultural cachet boosted in the last few years as more and more artists employ it (it already had street cred).
