DJ Teffler
Mashups can sometimes feel a bit gimmicky and opportunistic, but not in the hands of the DC-based remixer/producer DJ Teffler, who does a fine line in Nigerian-American mashups.
And they're going down a storm. It all started in 2010 with his remix of Oleku featuring Ice Prince and Snoop Dogg (below), which had over a million downloads and a lot of airplay, and the response has been similar with the ones he's dropped since. If you're a regular BBC 1xtra listener, you might have heard his Dr Sid-Rihanna mashup already, but if this is the first you're hearing of the dude, here are three examples:
Ice Prince ft. Snoop Dogg & Brymo - Oleku
Iyanya – Kukere, feat. Rihanna
D'Banj ft Elephant Man - Oliver Twist
Not a bad way for the more mainstream music fans in the US to acquaint themselves with Naija music, especially as the States has been a bit behind the UK in catching on to what's been happening in the last few years with West African urban music.
DJ Teffler released a 5-track EP of such mashups back in 2011, but he and his partner in music JuvyTek recently dropped a more extensive (17-track) compilation Gidi's Finest Remixes EP. Reloaded, and it includes 10 new mashups/remixes. See the track list below, then DOWNLOAD the compilation via Sendspace, and give the chap a shout on Twitter or Facebook.![]()
