Though there's a connection between the song and chants of the traditional griots and hip hop, the birth, in Senegal, of the genre we recognise today as hip hop occurred in the early 1980s, and Dakar, the capital of Senegal, was where this birth took place.

Perhaps it's something to do with language, Wolof and French, but hip hop coming out of Senegal has been one of the most distinctive sounds in African urban music since the artists learned to tap into their own experiences rather than emulate what was coming out of the States, and the country's hip hop scene is one of the most active on the continent (More about the development of hip-hop in Senegal).

The above clip is actually part of "Democracy in Dakar", a documentary about the role of hip hop in the 2007 elections in Senegal
