When we stop to think about it, it’s ridiculous that anyone goes hungry today. What kind of “progress” are we supposed to have made, exactly? And how can we have food crises when so much food is wasted?

The problem isn’t one of food scarcity, but of economic dysfunction. (Click on “Read More”)

In some places it is also partly a consequence of wars, political instability, and events that cause people to become refugees or internally displaced. But some wars are driven by economic dysfunction.

These images, which touch on the issues of food security, global food crisis, and hunger, were taken in Africa and the Middle East, but hunger is a problem in the most unexpected places, too: See America’s hunger crisis (The Guardian UK, May 21st, 2009).

The solution is in your hands
The global economy is still reeling from the most recent recession. It is up to each of us to make it known to our representatives that “business as usual” won’t be acceptable. Not this time.

Hunger was increasing even before the crisis, further confirmation that the economic models we’ve allowed ourselves to follow are flawed. The consequences of these flaws and dysfunctions – these periodic crashes, this weird lop-sidedness within economies - are just too great. And most of us are not as insulated from these consequences as we think.

The world is ours, people. It’s up to us to make it less riddled with uncertainty and fear.
