David Kpormakpor, aka “The Professor”, is neither tyrant nor embezzler, so you may not have heard of him, nor of most of the other men and women in positions of authority who don’t conform to the stereotype.

This former law professor and Supreme Court justice served as Interim President of Liberia between 1994-95.

A wartime president, he probably had his chances. What would you have done?

As Mo Ibrahim said in a recent BBC interview: "Africa is not that bad. (Click on “Read More”)

"Two or three terrible tyrants, which is still too many, but there are 53 countries in Africa. Corruption exists everywhere. Corruption exists in [the UK] also. We have to have a balanced view of governance."

"How would you feel if I came [to Europe] and all I talk about is Hitler and Milosevic - you had your bad guys.

"Let us be a little bit balanced in the way we view things."

Why didn't he take some money?
It is understandable, albeit telling, that some people think he missed an opportunity for self-enrichment. Each person's ethical and moral boundaries are simply a part of who they are. Sure, our actual boundaries may lie much  farther than we imagine, or much nearer - we find out precisely when faced with a moral or ethical dilemma - but we each draw the line somewhere, it's personal, and we may not be able to articulate our reasons. We are who we are, and we act accordingly; it troubles us when we don't. It's the furthest thing from tragedy.
