Track:        Biacara remix, ft. K-NEL
Album:       Single only
Released:  October 2009

The world took a day off yesterday to acknowledge the contribution of women, so it’s only right to turn the spotlight on a female artist on the come up in the boys’ club that is Hip-hop.

Stella Mwangi is her name, but STL is what fans affectionately call this Kenyan-born MC based in Norway. She’s been there since the age of three, when her father, an outspoken journalist, sought asylum in the Scandinavian country because of a then repressive Kenyan government.

Clearly, STL inherited the gift of the gab, and it is to the benefit of diversity in Hip hop. She’s inspired by seminal rap trio Salt-N-Pepa, and lately we got news that she too will be grabbing a small piece of the pop culture action over in the States. Her song Go Getta from her debut album Living For Music is being used as the theme song for former supermodel Tyra Banks-fronted reality show America’s Next Top Model.

Now, that’s girl power. Sort of...

STL’s in the lab working out a follow-up, and keeping our interest piqued with joints like this remix for Biacara, featuring Germany-based Kenyan rapper K-Nel.
