Where to buy
If you want a snapshot of where African hip hop is at today, a pretty good place to start is the Afrolution series. In 2005, Vol. 1 brought us some of the freshest Francophone and Anglophone African hip hop around, and the guys are set to do it again come the end of May. Click on "Read More" to listen to more tracks from this album. Afrolution Vol. 2 features some of the continent's most prolific and exciting artists from as far afield as South Africa, Malawi, Senegal, DRC, Cameroon, Mali, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda. Besides using this as a health check or as a jumping off point for Google searches, it's also a good illustration of how artists continue to mould the genre by weaving in more local elements and influences to create sounds that reveal more of the continent's multi-faceted identity.
