Yesterday was  Earth Day, but events, rallies, and various activities relating to the subject of climate change are going on around the world all week, so it seems apt to run Episodes 5 (Dakar) and 1 (Lagos) from the BBC's Hot Cities series that originally aired last October/November.

Climate change is starting to affect the way we live (it's no longer just about some shrinking polar ice caps thousands of miles aways). While the consequences are most noticeable in certain parts of Africa, Asia, Alaska and in island nations such as the Maldives, we know now that it's only a matter of time before everybody everywhere feels the pain. Hot Cities is about some of these consequences, and about how those immediately affected are being forced to adapt.

Dakar, Senegal: Feed the World
Half the world’s population face severe food shortages by the end of the century as climate change takes its toll on the global harvest. Drought in the Sahal, which runs through Senegal, means many climate migrants are flocking to the capital, Dakar, to find work to feed their families.

“Hot Cities - Feed the World” (above) follows migrants from their villages, where farming has almost been wiped out, to the city. This film also looks at what is being done to feed Senegal in the future.

Lagos, Nigeria: Bursting at the Seams

Lagos, as any regulator visitor to this site will know, is one of the toughest and the fastest growing mega cities in the world — and a place very vulnerable to the threat of climate change. Large areas of the Lagos could be swamped by sea level rises. The city is a magnet for migrants across the whole of West Africa hoping to find a better life.
