Well, what do you know? Apparently, Shakira & Freshlyground's Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) was a remake of Zangelewa, a Cameroonian song, sometimes called Zamina.
And why not? Millions around the world now know the song because of the remake. Now people can choose which which they feel like listening to, depending on the mood. Well, at any rate, those who know the original exists, a number growing by the day.

South Africa plays Uruguay today, a day of historical significance to all South Africans, but also a day tp remember for the rest of the world.
On this day in 1976, thousands of school children took to the streets of Soweto in protest against the educational policies of the racist apartheid regime.
The police opened fire, killing 23, including Hector Pietersen, a 12-year old boy, who died in the arms of a friend. The image, captured by a photographer, woke up the world to the realities of apartheid. This incident triggered the uprising, which lasted for days and resulted in hundreds more dead. There is, literally, a bit of African in all of us. African Americans sometimes proudly refer to Africa as "the motherland" (how deep this pride runs is another matter), but the dominant view of the origin of us modern humans suggests that Africa is everybody's "motherland".
We are one, though we sometimes forget this, and what better time to celebrate this than now?
The above vid was shot in Amsterdam, but it could have been shot anywhere. So wherever you are in the world, revel in your African-ness and say it with pride, I AM AFRICAN!
