The Bob Marley-Zimbabwe connection
Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Video: Meditation Rasta style - Glen Norah, Harare

Many Zimbabweans clearly remember the 18th of April, 1980, not only as the day Zimbabwe became independent, but also because Bob Marley gave a free concert at Rurafo Stadium to mark the occasion.

Remembering Bob Marley in the Zimbabwean Context
Tuesday, 13 May 2008

He composed a song for Zimbabwe, and at our independence-eve gala on 17 - 18 April, 1980, performed to a celebrating crowd at Rufaro stadium in Mbare. Zimbabwe was undergoing a huge transformation from colonial rule.

Reggae and Bob Marley's legacy in the ghettos - Dar es Salaam

The legacy lives on
The legacy lives on
He was a strong musician, a prophet, and freedom fighter, a symbol of freedom for the oppressed of the world.  It’s been twenty-seven years since he died, but the legacy of Bob Marley still lives. The rhythms of his music makes you swing, the messages in his songs make you think and act positively.

Worldwide there are celebrations commemorating Bob Marley’s life taking place, and in Tanzania, “Bob Marley’s day” was marked by an event that took place at Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam.

Press 'freedom' to portray the ghettos - Nairobi
Tuesday, 06 May 2008

Farouk, with whom I speak in the video, is one of the more unusual mainstream journalists in that he’s from the ghettos, and can thus speak as a ghetto resident, but he's also a media professional, and so can look, simultaneously, at the reality from that perspective. Furthermore, he doesn’t try to hide his roots and isn’t brainwashed by the mainstream media’s biased reporting. (Apologies for the background noise). All of which stands in contrast to what I'd like to highlight in the rest of this piece.

Freedom of expression and censorship - Dakar
Monday, 05 May 2008

Pato, representing the Dakar ghetto known as Yeumbel, has been a rapper for 12 years.

This is a video of Pere Noel (Father Christmas), which Pato made a short while ago, and is now banned.

What is Pere Noel (Father Christmas) about?
In the track/video, Pato talks about the fact that the poorer people are disappointed in the government because it failed to keep its promises, and life has just become harder and harder for them.
