See Femi Kuti play New York on Saturday 26th January

by Siji Jabbar

Femi Kuti - trumpet (660x300)

New-York-based fans of Afrobeat are in for a treat this weekend.

NOTE: This giveaway has now ended. See update below for the winner.

On Saturday the 26th, Femi Kuti will be performing at Webster Hall, New York, and we have a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky This Is Africa reader.

Femi says he will be taking his audience back to the essence of Afrobeat, which is also the central aim of his 7th album, No Place for My Dream. Afrobeat, he says, is about “making people dance while helping them swallow the bitter pill of reality.”

Anyone who knows anything about any of the 55 countries in Africa will understand the many forms that bitter pill has taken, and why Afrobeat inspired by this pill is so important. And if you've listened to anything by Femi, you don't need us to tell you how his music feeds the mind and body.

Femi Kuti and his band Positive Force will take the stage at Webster Hall at 8pm on Saturday night (doors open at 7pm), and tickets are on sale now, but you might get to see the show for free if yours is the correct answer we pick at random from our inbox this Thursday at noon (CET).

The questions is:

In what year was Femi Kuti's very first album released, and what was it called?

Email your answer to info@thisisafrica.me (Subject field: I want to see Femi Kuti) with your name, city and a contact number, and you will hear from us on Thursday if you win.

Please note that we're not gonna be flying the winner in to see the show, so it'll probably only make sense to participate in this giveaway if you happen to live in New York, plan to be in New York on Saturday, or are such a huge fan that you're willing to pay to get to New York just to see him play.

Good luck!

UPDATE: Thursday, noon

We have a winner! (The answer: No Cause For Alarm?, released in 1989.)

Congrats to Rosemary Osho of Providence, Rhode Island, and see you at the show. We're sure you and whoever you bring along are going to have a great time.

Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway. We had only the one pair to give away, but tickets are still on sale, so hurry and get one before they sell out.
