We gave you the heads-up on Kenyan neo-soul artist, fashion designer (House of Imani) and former model Liz Ogumbo last September, but at the time the album was yet to be released. Now it's out, and Liz recently shot a couple of videos to support KenSoul.
That previous post included the lovely Maro Pa More, but whereas that version featured Just A Band, this one features Zambian rapper Zubz. (Both versions are included on the album, so no need to choose one or the other). The video was shot in Kenya, though both Liz and Zubz are now based in South Africa.
Liz weaves her Kenyan and global influences into 12 tracks - spoken word, jazzy tones, reggae riddims - and the material, whether in Luo, Swahili, English or French, always remains soulful, as you'd expect from an album with such a title.
We'd been so looking forward to the video for Big Nyash (aka Big Ass in Blue Jeans) - fab subject matter - so we were kinda disappointed when we saw this. Bit of a wasted opportunity, really. Oh, well. Still love that big fat bass.
