There are few really good African Hip-hop mixtapes out there, and The Extraordinaires is surely one of them. A collaboration between emcee The Holstar, one of the driving forces behind Hip-hop in Zambia over the last six years, and inventive, prolific Nigerian producer Teck-Zilla of the Str8Buttah crew, the 10-track album is made up of gritty, soulful beats and insightful topics, a welcome break from the typical pop-hook laden rap songs we're all so used to hearing.
From the self questioning Black Man Struggling featuring UK based Mister Rae (also of Str8Buttah), to the rapid fire ratatat found on Skills feat Southern Africa-based Zambian emcee Zubz, The Extraordinaires is a prime example of Hip-hop in its purest form - thought-provoking and head bobbing.
The Holstar and Teck-Zilla first linked up on Africanhiphop.com where they collaborated on Zone Fam’s To be an African (off the African Hip-hop Mixtape) before going on to work on Zone Fam’s first full project The Full Script (which, if you missed, you should check out).
