Anbuley is another name we ought to have included in our short piece about African artists rooted in Africa but oblivious to boundaries of geography or genre (as you can probably tell from the above and from her previous releases; links at the end of this post).
The Austria-based Ghanaian singer has been steadily making a name for herself on the underground club scene with EPs and singles that could be described as Afro-Electronic or Afro-European takes on club music. It's odd though that in this day and age people still try very hard to pigeonhole Africans whose identity extends beyond Africa. In Anbuley's case, for some people she's not African enough –whatever that means – and for others she's nothing but African. But she was born in Europe (or, as she said in a recent interview, "born into European club music"), lived in Ghana for some years before moving back to Europe, so her identity consists of influences from both places, and you feed what you are into your music. To do otherwise, she says, is to fake it, and that won't pass unnoticed, and you the artist won't "feel" what you're making.
Anbuley's releases are usually in collaboration with artists/DJs/producers from the global dance scene, like Bert on Beats and Zakee, and on this latest EP Kemo' Yoo Keke she teams up with Austrian Dancehall producer Tipanic. The lyrics are in Ga, a language spoken mainly in the Accra area.
