Every artist trying to make a name for themselves claims to have mad skills or better yet, talent, and those of us who write about artists are guilty of overusing the words too, especially the latter. Which might be part of the reason why some artists, two, three albums in, still leave you wondering whether their "skills" might not lie more in self-promotion than in their art.
And then you hear a track or watch a video from someone you've never heard of and you think, hmm, I think we've got something here. You might not know how to define it, but you know what's real when you hear or see it.
We don't want to overhype Xtatic, a young Kenyan rapper who counts Common and Lauryn Hill among her influences, and who came to our attention with this brief first track, but her wordplay, flow and something undefinable mark her out as someone to watch. Of course many before her have shown that spark of promise only to disappoint later. We hope that won't be the case with Xtatic.
