Oh, yes! Dubstep duo Stinkahbell (Nutty P and Enza) have turned Baby Sol's Always, originally a Big Band-Ska number, into a dark, brooding banger and we love it! Now that's a remix!
Baby Sol, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (or Zaire, as it was then known) and moved to the UK at the age of 16, had a decade of experience in the music business before going solo in 2007 and releasing Before I Begin - the debut EP on which the original of Always appears - earlier this year. We don't know how we managed to omit news of this release, but better late than never, eh? If you haven't already checked it out, do so now 'cos it's a truly satisfying acoustic set covering Soul, Jazz, Reggae, Pop, (even hints of Rock), and a great showcase for Baby Sol's beautiful vocals and songwriting skills. Every track on it works. I use the word "set" deliberately because the 7-track EP (8 if you buy digital) is arranged to give the impression of a live set.![]()
'Write what you know' is the advice always given to writers, and it is advice Miss Baby Sol adheres to on Before I Begin as she takes you through the emotional ups and downs of her life with great honesty and lyricism. Always, for instance, is based on her experiences with all the guys who cheated on her. Ouch! Here's Baby Sol explaining the genesis of each song:
Those who were fortunate enough to be at the EP release show say you really need to see her live to fully understand why she is undoubtedly a star in the making. We hope we can soon; you, too, I imagine. Until then, have a listen to four tracks from the EP and then go grab it from Record Store, iTunes or Amazon. Support good art and artists; this is an independently-released EP and it's worth it.
