Dj Musty is a new name at Ghetto Radio, but in the six months since he's been at the station his Jamrock Doba reggae show (every monday and wednesday night) has become very popular. He will join Dj Prince and Mbusii on 19 December in the Glass House for the Serious Request campaign - six days locked inside the house without drinking, eating or smoking, and with no direct contact with their beloved ones on the other side of the glass.
This year is Musty's first time to be inside the house. He's well prepared and has urged his listeners to join in the six days of Serious Request. Musty: "I have already told people to come and donate blood so I'm very keen on the music they request. Right now I am doing my research on music. Come and donate blood, then request a song. I'm going to take it very seriously because by donating blood can save the life of a child, a mother, father... So it's a gift that we have inside us, to give to injured people. Not everyone can save a life but we now have an opportunity to do so we can't waste that opportunity."
Why this year's theme of blood donation? "Here in Kenya when we have the April, August and December holidays in Kenya we need more blood in the hospitals because you'll have everybody out there having fun and there are more [road] accidents. So I think it's a great opportunity for everyone to come out in December to the Hilton square to donate blood because we need it in our hospitals."
Musty has never donated blood before, but is looking to do so this year. "There was a time when my mom did it, but my own health was not OK so I couldn't donate. This year after Serious Request I am looking forward to donating blood. I'm going into the Glass House also to learn, meet people, do interviews with people so that we will be educating each other. Coming out of the glass house I'll be like an ambassador, to inform and encourage people to donate blood in our country."
What music is Musty going to bring to the Glass House? "I want to play something totally different from what I play at the studio or at the clubs. I want to make it a very good experience for people coming out to Hilton Square so that next year when we request to come, they will come for something different. My mission is to play very special tunes for the listeners. Professionally I am a reggae dj, we have got so much reggae music which we don't present from the listeners because of time limits; this is a chance for people to come there and listen to reggae music."
Like Dj Prince, Musty hasn't even considered his first meal after six days of surviving on fruit shakes. "After the glass house I want to go my wife and see my baby girl and then I want to go to church and pray, because it's December 24."
