Nairobi shootout: gangster phones Ghetto Radio in plea to surrender

Last saturday (October 15), five people lost their lives in a shooting drama between police and suspected robbers in Prudential estate (Buruburu), a section of Nairobi's Eastlands (Kenya) after attempting to commit a robbery nearby. One of the gangsters called in to Ghetto Radio to plea for his life - a recording of that conversation can be heard below.

The man who identified himself as Stevo phoned in to the Ghetto Radio station, explaining on air that he was surrounded and wanted to surrender but was afraid that the police might shoot and kill him anyway. After being chased by the police, he had barricaded himself in a residential home in Prudential estate, from where he shot three police offers, killing one. An innocent bystander also lost her life after getting trapped in the crossfire.

After receiving the call, station manager Maji Maji and Ghetto Radio reporter Dj Musty (later joined by Mac Otani) rushed to the scene in an attempt to convince the police to arrest Steve without ending his life, but the scene was already out of control and finally he was killed by police bullets, shortly before 6PM.

The sad events did not go unnoticed in Kenya, and the Ghetto Radio Facebook page is full of comments by listeners (here and here) discussing the question: did Steve have it coming or should he have been arrested and taken to trial?
